I believe it was the outer edge, but if you could do both edges it would be better...
Slacking as it become loose very soon (more than expected)? If the side pulley edge is binding the belt movement (ussualy you hear/feel the binding turning by hand when it was all new), it would create extra heat and load to the belt as it is with the front belt being toucing with the lower chassis.
