The diff you are referring to is a multi diff It can be a one-way diff with out the pins ,only has drive when accelerating , both front wheels free wheel independently Off power braking is a lot harder need to brake in a straight line.
Pins inserted becomes a solid diff both wheels turn the same speed as other on and off power
I never had to do this to my MRX-4X This locking Axle thing is new to me
