In this area at least 4WD comes and goes and 2WD is always here in big numbers. 4WD I think is just too expensive to own and race for most people.
From what I have seen, 1/10th 4wd buggy is totally dead in socal, at least as far as club racing goes. I never see more than 1-3 show up on any given night. Sometimes none. 1/8th scale 4wd does it better. Faster and much more durable.

There never seems to be a shortage of the 2wd buggies though. Still going strong.
