There is a big difference between driving smoothly and taking it slow. You can drive smoothly and be the fastest car on the track. Actually that is usually the case. Even if it doesn't look like you're going fast. You're under control and hitting your line every lap vs. pulling the trigger in everywhere and blowing every corner. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.
