I'm just leavin the arms the wat they are, it works.

As to my second question I got my hands on some tamiya parts and tryed it out. The 48mm axels work fine with the delrin spool, but will probably be to long with the alu. one. Found a picture of Marc Fischers car, he was running 44mm tamiya axels.
