Check the o-ring in the lid. It may not be worn and not getting a tight seal on the tank opening. Mine loosened up over time, and I had to replace it.

The pressure loss will result in not getting enough fuel flow to the engine....which means it will run exponentially leaner as the fuel level drops, and the volume of air in the tank increases.
