As I was saying, it has not died but it is not nearly as popular as it used to be a couple of years ago. We used to regulary have 60-80 entries in a club race running primarily 1/8th buggy.
Now when you go to the track, unless you coordinated participation from all your RC buddies, you'll be lucky to race. Hopefully this will change as it is now warmer. Scratch that, we've had out 3 weeks of spring...it'll be hotter than Satan's ass before long
