You can definitely remove 1 shim on the stock engine...however I wouldn't be doing that till the engine is fully broken in and you have the tune somewhat settled.....However if all else fails removing a shim may actually make it easier to tune with a rich needle setting.... higher compression makes it more able to burn fuel...
when you say you have run 20 tanks, what exactly are you doing during those 20 tanks ?
