How warm did you get the motor? Heat + Magnets = weaker Magnets
Every motor is different. I have several motors and after testing, they all seem to have slightly different sweet spots. One thing to try is replacing the rotor (or even exchanging the rotor between your new and old motor) and see if it makes any difference.
