Yes there is a reason, but it is closely related to the type of drive train.

On a belt driven car, most of the losses are due to the binding of the belt. With this new pulley ratio, they achieved less binding on the belt and less linear speed of the belt aswell. Besides, the main shaft spins much slower, decreasing the amount of energy needed to move the car.

Only few of this is appliable on the SD drive train, only the energy.
