I honestly dont see a reason for bearings on the rack, I dont see how they will make it any smoother. It will roll on one side, and slide on the other side twice the amount that it does now. Whereas the bushings roll on both sides. If you wanted a really smooth BB steering setup, you'd need 4 micro bearings, 2 on each side of the rack, mounted inside like they are now, but so that they wouldnt touch both of the rack rails that it slides on.

I think you found the best way to free up the steering rack already.
