2 AAA would probably be too much. Space, weight and CG on these cars is important. What I liked about the 1 AAA is how tidy it fit behind the servo.
I used just an alkaline, and it lasted 2-3 practice runs, 2 quals, and 3 mains. You could use 1 of the 1100mah rechargeables if you wanted a permanent solution.
