I've found even a cheap 25mm fan wired into the ESC will drop the temps by 30F. I imagine a high RPM fan to the battery could really move some air.
Actually they were not running fans. I have found the same thing. Just a fan can keep the temps down 25-30 degrees. I had been hooking mine up direct to the battery but I got a new Muchmore Ultra high RPM fan that I just plug in the receiver and it seems to do the job just fine. Definitely not as cool as direct but I think some races (like ROAR) don't allow it direct to the battery.
Not sure how much the fans would have helped these guys though. The guy that TQed and won his motor was 230* when it melted down.
I've been running the Ballistic motor and it really falls off at 155 degrees. The fan is a necessity with that motor.
