Sounds to me like the shifting mechanism is not releasing or the finger is getting stuck. Either way, you need to tear it apart and take a look. Once you have the shifter in your hand, you can operate the finger and figure out why is won't go back into place. It may need a little lube or just may have a metal bur on it. It's something simple as the tranny isn't much to begin with.
