after re-soldering a new connector I came to realize that I was using a male connector It shorted again and actually burned up the other side of the connector. It wasn't getting that hot so Im not sure why it kept shorting out. Anyway so now that I remember to use a female connector it should be fine. I'm still making some rookie mistakes...
