I would venture to say that the softer compounds would tend to be "stickier" and pick up more carpet fuzz/debris etc. As the tires heat and become sticker, they would tend to pick up this debris and lose traction in the middle of the run. The harder tires would provide enough grip but not be so soft they pick up a lot of the junk on the track.
