The wide pitch pulley supposedly allows the drivetrain to be more efficient since less belt teeth are in direct contact with the pulley and hence less friction is generated, apparently they're only to be used in stock classes (10.5/13.5/17.5/21.5) because the extra torque generated by mod winds just ends up ripping the belts to shreds.
