The latest generation of xrays have sloppy steering compared to the older models. Its the style of turnbuckle ends and the ball joints. Get someone with an xray in good condition to compare. Lots of crashing and bashing generates alot of slop.
He's got a T2 007 which I would say it's rather old. But even if it isn't, mine (another T2 007) had slop in the turnbuckles from brand new in the box.
