Google up Sydney RC Drifters and have a look around.
I've been to a few of their events, and from what I can tell, it's basically like any other form of on road racing, or racing in general. you get what you pay for.
There are a couple E10's but I have seen one literally fall apart on the track. TT's seem a little better built, but run hot. A good carbon and alloy chassis will see you enjoy it the most.
Balance is important, so if you run something like a TA05, make sure it's balanced side to side.
Personal experience shows that shaft drive gives snappier response.
