The pipe is not a heatsink. It's aluminum but not finned so the head cools quickly, the pipe does not. Plus exhaust temps are always very high. Somewhere on youtube is a video of an F1 car without the bodywork being fired up at night. Just sitting there at idle and getting revved up occasionally it still turns the headers white hot.
