If you're going to use AMB pt which most people use you will have to buy AMB's decoder. You may have luck finding an older AMB decoder unit that is for sale. Make sure it isn't the older AMB 20 decoder since it doesn't work with personals.

For the track surface concrete maybe alright but it depends on the surface smoothness, grip etc. You're probably better off using carpet (ozite?)that's made for racing rc cars on but I'm not the one to ask about.

For good track layouts I would look up big races such as Reedy Race of Champions, Snowbirds etc. for a good starting point.
