I know i could find my answer if i read through these hundred some pages but i didn't

i got mine all setup now minus the motor. The guy i bought it from said he rebuilt the diff but didn't put fluid in it. Is it important? Should i put fluid in it and also i hear everyone talking about shimming it. Do i have to do that and how?
