Thats what i thought to start with, but the inner filter was spotless so i wasnt quite sure how it would suck water in. It is one of the most likely causes though.
At least i have a few possible causes now, will give the engine the once over when i clean up the car.

the filter would have worked like a strainer , but some water would have sucked in .. best bet is to give it a good flush and rebuild , inspect there is no scoring on the piston and that alls ok inside ..
