Lube the bearings/bushings in the motor.
If that doesn't work, try another motor.
As for the 540 gearing, try the schumacher website and look for stock or 27 turn gearing options. They will probably give you an FDR suggestion. That's Final Drive Ratio. Then go to gearchart.com to punch in your spur/pinion and car model to figure out your options.
