Sounds like you may have been bit by the downside of using a lipo in a starter box. Too easy to run the battery down below acceptable limits and have it still cranking an engine. You don't know it till the next time you go to charge and the rate won't come up.

Best to add something that lets you know the voltage or plan on charging on a regular basis whether you think it needs it or not.

Glad it was a metal case.
