Gear Ratios....

I am currently running a Trinity Revenge of the Monster in my XXX-S. Running a 118 spur with a (currently) 37 tooth pinion. I chose these gears due to a spec sheet on the Losi website. Seems to me that it was overgeared though, so I figured I would take it down a few teeth on the pinion.
If I go down to a 31 tooth pinion for example, will I have to change the spur gear too? Or rather, would it be advisable for me to change the spur gear?
In addition to this I see gear ratios being touted around, and final drive ratios too. Whats the difference? And how do I work it out?
Its all very confusing. I wish I had kept my Optima Mid now, that was easy, I just crashed it a lot and carried the bits home at the end of the day!
