I think tire is a big part of setup. Different tires and foam inserts combinations give the car different traction characteristics. Some tires give better turnin, some give better turn out. Without the ball park combination of tires/inserts, no matter how you set the suspension, you will not be able to get the characteristics that you want. This is just from my personal experience in off road.
