I find it's often best to see what people around you are racing, even if you're just planning on driveway runs at first. You'll have access to used parts, tips, and you'll already have a proper car if you do decide to race. Check your lhs, track or forum and see what people are into.

Locally, we've got a decent group of M03, F1, and RC18 racers. Certainly the AE kits are the right price.

That being said, I've got my eyes on a Tamiya Mini!
