Toon,

The 17.5 will always be slower than the Hobbywing system as you can not change the gearing on the mini.

I have tried this before and was being beaten by sport tuned motors. The car does not have the torque or punch. I even set the timing to max and the punch to full. At the time I was using a SP 17.5 and also tried a Novak 17.5 with a speed passion ver 1 speed controller.

I agree with TG that the Hobbywing is the better system.
