This might defy common convention when gearing spec type motors... but I have found that using the largest possible gear combination to reach a desired FDR seems to yeild better results than simply throwing the smallest spur gear you can find in the car and gearing accordingly.
For instance this past weekend I was doing some testing running a given FDR with a 116 spur... when someone else was testing with the exact same equipment and FDR but with a 112 spur, he felt like he didn't have the same grunt out of the corners that I had.
When he finally put the 116 in with the same FDR, he immediately felt increased bottom end performance.
