The opposite side of the belt tunnel has been milled out to allow the batteries to be closer to the centerline of the car. The piece of plastic you can see that's glued across the batt. slots is the new "outside edge" the cells rest against. The belt tunnel is quite open, but looks like it's sealed by the cells themselves. There are more pics at the Orion site.
