For the battery slots get a good small file, diamond if U can and just take off the sharp edges of the carbon so it doesn't cut into the cells. Another way of doing this is to wrap some emery paper round an old cell and 'roll it' in the slot.

Do you bother to do the battery cell cuts outs with super-glue?
