Well you just made my point there. why buy that S3 in the first place? you can get the new L2g engine for $185. Definately not worth it to buy a used older model engine for only $25 less than the new version costs new.
About the S5, that would be worth it. as you said the S5 L2g sells for about $230-240. $135 is a good deal for 1/2 gallon old engine.
as for the engines in general, I have seen both run and actually own an S5 and definately reccomend the S5 over the S3. Don't get me wrong the S3 is a very good engine but the S5 dominates it in every catagory. The S3 is great for a small track but runs out out of power on a longer track. the S5 is a very good engine.
