Dude i've got the same set up as you batteries aren't the problem all you need to do is gear up!
To give you an idea i raced at the weekend at carpet wars and did the usual asked around what people were geared at that had the same motor as me and got answers between 5.5 + 5.7 i tried and like you i had no problem going through the tight in field but down the straightaway i was getting murdered so i geared up a 2 teeth on the pinion 4.95 and solved the problem. It seems to me the gtb/ss combo's have bundles of torque so gear up as long as you keep an eye on the temp after 5mins you should be fine. Also check out the instruction manual some of the settings can come in handy and are quite easy to change.
