i have a nova 12-3 plus thats had 3 gallons of byrons through i change the rod every gallon

You should be able to hear when the bearings are going bad. Some engines can last 6 gallons on a set of bearings, and some only a couple. You should not be able to feel much lateral play in the bearings. You can also turn the bearings by hand. The slightest bit if grittiness is no good, and the bearings should be replaced.
