Maybe; as I mentioned, there have been multiple examples where "cheapo" ESCs (Duratrax, Traxxas, others) have proven to be incompatible with the spektrum receivers.
Oftentimes it's a matter of the radio have to be "re-bound" and/or the ESC re-set each time the vehicle is turned on (because of the delay built into the ESC, the radio has to be re-set each time because it had to wait to be "found"), and other cases where they just don't work together at all.
To me it's one of those many instances where I've always followed the rule of "spend once on higher-end electronics, and you'll never be disappointed." It's just not worth scrimping on.
