When I hook up battery, ESC and spektrum Receiver, I only get steering, no red light and no motor power. Sounds like you just weren't getting a good connection, or the motor plug wasn't inserted fully, initially when you installed it. Because reversing the plugs made everything work, just on the wrong channels.
Another thing to consider is the "cheapo" ESC could be the problem. There have been multiple instances on a lot of forums where guys have had trouble with the cheaper/budget ESCs having problems when trying to be used with the higher-end spektrum radio equipment.
It's a shame you spent a lot of money on your radio but decided to save a buck on your ESC. A lesson in
