RcSteve's answer a few posts back is correct... those aren't splices, he stripped the silicone insulation and replaced it with heat shrink to make it thinner.
A very cool technique I learned from ODPurple
My BMI has been set up like that for a season now and with this rebuild I am going to try getting a softer sensor wire and routing that under the battery as well.
