You can go racing in the spec class to with the stock electronics, or drop a brushless in for fun around the house.
I really like the rustler, but for for $10 more I could get the rc10t4 team. I really don't care for the rustler electronics anyways. Back in the day, the rustler was available as a kit for less than $100. Parts are cheap, readily available, and this thing is a beast. If those kits were still available, I'd do it.
I definitely wanna build it. I'm also looking into the hpi, but I'm not sure if those are available as a kit.
