Check that the screws used to bolt the engine mount, dont use oversized countersink washers... Like Baedarlboo said... De-attach anything holding the engine when making the gear mesh (header, fuel line, throttle link)... If you had to add many shims after the thrust bearing, you could try remove them and add them before the flywheel... This will make the clutch assembly reach out farther. Be careful not to over do this because I have seen much lateral play in clutchbells when the assembly is pushed out like this which leads to stripped gears...
