less timing = more torque, increased efficiency, less revs
more timing = less torque, less efficiency, more revs (harder on the motor's com, increased arcing etc)

most motors have a sweet spot, can be hard to find. I normally start with 12deg of timing on my 7/8/ or 9 turns.
