Myself too is considered new to this RC hobby thing, and man I had such a late head-start and missed out so much fun!
But picking up this hobby late has it's up-side too, because at least I'm working now and is financially more capable of sustaining it.

As with any hobby, interest or sports, the best way to start is not to spend money first. In my humble opinion, the safest and best way to go is to visit drift meet and get to know people from there. I'm certain you'll meet someone that you can click with, and with his or their help, you'll be properly guided with where the hard-earned money should go. You may even get used freebies.

P.S. Good thing about RC drifting is, it can be the cheapest among other RC car types to play.. if we can be content with being " minimalist".
You don't need a expensive car to enjoy drifting.
