Yeah, i started RC when i was 8. started racing when i was 11, and now im 15. Sponsors look for not only a capable driver, but also a good rep. for their products as well as for the wellfare of the hobby.
Go to some big races, get your name out there, start racing classes like mod, work on your own car(s) (something most kids in the hobby don't do). Being that you are 12, a sponsor may see that as a disavantage for them, considering you have school to deal with as well as the fact that you do not have the ability to drive to whever you want.

Also, in RC, the best advice i ever got was to not take everybody's advice.
