I race with a guy sponsored by avid that made the a-main in the US nat's and they always looked good, lol, in his car so I tried and am very happy.
I run the rubber seal most time stuffed with tamiya ceramic grease when new and the metal shield for 'big' races' in the hubs anyway.
I feel oil is great for electric but nitro needs grease, for me, it lasts much longer and the drag difference is small esp with powerful nitro engines

( Some people argue that creamic grease would create drag and the bearing won't spin as freely as we compare to light bearing oils. But like you said, for longer race duration or longer service, the grease will be better application for such duration. Max top speed differences is not noticeable AFAIK ).
