I think Tamiya has already answered most of the questions raised here. TCS should be more widely spread throughout the nation. Unfortunately, I don't think Tamiya USA has that kind of resource.
For the younger crowd, there's the mini4wd that is still huge in Japan. Kids can start getting technical at an early age with these. But not many care for it in the US. Why? It is because kids don't want to get their hands dirty these days. Not going into detail here since it has been done to death in another thread, but the mechnically adept population is decreasing imo.
