No this is not the case and also yes the new diff is suppose to get up to 30 runs on a 8.5 motor so a mod motor should produce a fair few runs on the new style diff.

You can do the team mod to the standard diffs, which is to remove the thrust bearing and replace it with a flanged bearing and the washer from the SP12 or a cone washer.
The thrush copes o lot of crap in it so with it removed the diff is smoother and lasts longer between rebuilds.
