The HPI, and all the other two-belt tourers with a rear motor, and high layshaft, are copying the transmission design of the Kyosho Lazer ZX buggy.
That came out in about 1989.

but I agree with johnbull..... all those who think HPI popularist the 2 belt touring had better re-think! The Japanese touring RC was popular in Asia waaaay before it crossed the waters!!
