Fuzz- I'm pretty sure you will have to get a backplate for the engine in order for the starter box to work. I have the RTR version, and I got the sportwerks backplate, and it fit perfectly on the SH engine. on amain hobbies, search for backplate, and the first one--I believe--is the right one. It should cost $11.99. With the backplate, you will be able to lower the engine off the spacers, and have the flywheel be able to touch the wheel. Unless you want to do some serious dremeling to the chassis, this is the easiest fix.
I have actually used this back plate and one of them required dremeling and one was a perfect fit
Anyway I use the ofna blue two motor box I think it is around $100 and can run off of two stick packs
