I want to go with a brand that is known for perfect fit and finish. Parts availability would be good too.

i've never seen a 1/12th scale go together like an X-Ray touring car. i start r/c racing with pan cars (RC10L and RC12LW) and the current 1/12th scale cars have come a long way since then. since 2008 i've owned both the BMI DB12R and the Team Speedmerchant Rev 5. each car has their own pluses and thankfully they are both more durable than a RC12L4.
i would encourage your friends to either post on this forum or their car specific forum.
