Larger spur & pinion will transfer the power more efficiently because less thrust is being generated as the teeth meet eachother at a more similar angle. Also each tooth is being used a less percentage of time for a given rotation further reducing stress. The smaller spur & pinion combo has less rotational mass and moment of inertia. It's a give & take situation. It seems the larger gears are preferred...
